In the crowded midsize sedan segment, both the Kia Optima and Mazda 6 are standouts, offering quality and reliability that surpass many of their competitors. For the best performance and aesthetic value, the 2016 Kia Optima has a distinct advantage over its Japanese rival.

The Kia Optima is completely redesigned for 2016, whereas the Mazda 6 received just a few minor design tweaks from its makers.

Traffic Safety

The new Kia Optima, now available at Kia dealers, offers a truly premium driving experience with an extremely quiet cabin, lots of luxury features uncommon to mid-size sedans, and lots of options for consumers who like to personalize their vehicles.

Performance & Driving

The new Optima offers consumers several engine choices, including a 2.4 liter four-cylinder engine that cranks out 185 horsepower and 178 lb. ft. of torque, a turbocharged 2.0 liter four-banger that generates 245 horsepower and 260 lb. ft. of torque, and a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that produces 245 horsepower and 260 lb. ft. of torque. The two turbocharged options are only available on upper trim levels of the Optima.

The new Mazda offers only one engine option to consumers, a rather bland 2.5-liter four cylinder engine that generates 184 horsepower and 185 lb. ft. of torque.

Automotive journalists have given the Kia Optima high praise for its handling and performance, while the Mazda has garnered some criticism for stiff handling. Automotive journalists have also noted that the Mazda 6 can offer a bumpy ride at times.

Technology and Interior

Technology is where Kia has really shined in recent years, doing a better job than its competitors of making electronics accessible and helpful in vehicles. The Optima is no exception. The Optima has a great 8-inch touchscreen that is very user-friendly, offering large virtual buttons and a very clear pictures. The set-up for the touchscreen is very intuitive, and the Optima also offers smartphone integration via Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The Mazda offers a smaller, clunkier touchscreen, and the vehicle’s navigation system leaves much to be desired. Both the Mazda 6 and the Kia Optima offer well-made interiors that make extensive use of quality materials and have comfortable seating.

Value and Warranty

The Optima does come in slightly more expensive than the new Mazda 6. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price for the Optima is $29,540. The MSRP for a new Mazda 6 is $26,730. Considering all the value provided by the new Kia Optima, however, it’s a price well worth paying. The Optima is covered by Kia’s 10-year, 100,000 mile warranty, whereas the Mazda 6 offers a far less generous warranty package.
